Our Story

Serving The San Francisco Bay Area Since 2011.

Sam Kanenwisher, Owner and Founder of Kanen Coffee, LLC. has always been driven by curiosity and a love of figuring out how things work. As a child, he was constantly taking things apart and putting them back together, a habit that naturally led him to a career as an Electronics Technician in the U.S. Coast Guard. There, he spent four years repairing radars, radios, and air traffic control systems aboard a Coast Guard Cutter that frequently operated in the Caribbean.

After his service, Sam felt drawn to develop his skills in working with people. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work from Augsburg University in 2006 and went on to pursue a Master of Divinity at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, California, graduating in 2010. All the while, his love of coffee kept brewing in the background—he roasted his own beans at home and later deepened his knowledge through a roasting and tasting course at Boot Coffee Consulting.

The turning point came in late 2010, when a family member asked Sam to repair their espresso machine—a La Pavoni Europiccola. Sam picked up the phone and began calling manufacturer representatives directly, learning hands-on from the experts themselves. Through those conversations, he taught himself how to properly service espresso machines. Word spread quickly, and soon others in the community were asking him to repair their machines.

By January 2011, Kanen Coffee was born.

Over the years, Kanen Coffee has grown into a trusted Bay Area provider of espresso machine sales, service, and repair. Sam has built the company with a commitment to quality craftsmanship, sustainability, and personal connection—whether it’s helping home baristas perfect their morning ritual or supporting cafés and roasters in delivering exceptional coffee.

Kanen Coffee continues to thrive by building relationships, solving problems, and staying grounded in the joy of coffee and the art of repair.
